Why Window Coverings Are Critical for Wisconsin Floors
Why Every Flooring Project Needs a Window Treatment Strategy

When homeowners in Fond du Lac or Oshkosh invest in new flooring, they often spend hours debating the perfect shade of white oak or the most durable luxury vinyl plank (LVP). However, there is one silent “roommate” that can ruin even the highest quality installation: The Sun.
When homeowners in Fond du Lac or Oshkosh invest in new flooring, they often spend hours debating the perfect shade of white oak or the most durable luxury vinyl plank (LVP). However, there is one silent “roommate” that can ruin even the highest quality installation: The Sun.
The Science of Solar Heat Gain and Your Floors
Large glass openings, like sliding patio doors, act as magnifying glasses for solar energy. This phenomenon, known as Solar Heat Gain, can cause the surface temperature of your floor to skyrocket well beyond the ambient temperature of your room. On a 75°F day in Oshkosh, the direct sunlight hitting a dark floor through an untreated window can easily push surface temperatures above 110°F.
This rapid heating and cooling cycle (thermal expansion and contraction) puts immense stress on flooring materials.
Impact on LVP, SPC, and WPC
Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP), Stone Plastic Composite (SPC), and Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) are beloved for being waterproof, but they are not “bulletproof” against heat.
Warping and Cupping: Excessive heat can cause the vinyl layers to expand faster than the core, leading to boards that “peak” at the seams or curl at the edges.
Delamination: In extreme cases, the adhesive bond between the wear layer and the core can fail due to high temperatures.
Impact on Hardwood and Engineered Hardwood
Natural wood is a living material. Even after it is harvested and finished, it reacts to its environment.
Fading and Photosensitivity: Just like your skin, wood can “sunburn.” Certain species like Cherry or Walnut will darken or lighten significantly (fading) when exposed to UV rays.
Gapping and Checking: High heat dries out the natural oils and moisture in the wood, causing the planks to shrink, leading to unsightly gaps or “checking” (small cracks in the grain).
Impact on Tile and Sheet Vinyl
Even “stable” surfaces like tile aren’t immune. Rapid thermal expansion can put pressure on grout lines, leading to cracking. Standard sheet vinyl, if subjected to intense heat near a patio door, can lose its bond with the subfloor and develop permanent bubbles or ripples.

Managing the “Invisible” Threat: Humidity and Moisture
While heat is the visible threat, humidity is the invisible one. In Wisconsin, our humidity swings are legendary—from the bone-dry air of a Fond du Lac winter to the tropical humidity of an Oshkosh summer.
To keep your flooring stable, we recommend monitoring your home’s environment with a hygrometer. Ideally, your home should stay between 30% and 50% relative humidity. Many of our clients find success integrating AprilAire whole-home humidification systems into their HVAC to ensure consistent levels year round.
The Quest interiors Advantage: The Fidbox
For our hardwood and engineered hardwood clients, Quest Interiors takes protection a step further. When we install these premium products, we will often spec a Fidbox.
A Fidbox is a small, silent monitor installed underneath your flooring. It tracks the temperature and humidity of both the subfloor and the wood itself 24/7. This data is accessible via a smartphone app, giving you an early warning if your sunroom is getting too hot or your basement is getting too damp—providing you with the ultimate peace of mind and an undeniable record of care for warranty purposes.

A Beautiful View Shouldn’t Cost You a Floor
You don’t have to live in the dark to protect your home. Modern window treatments—from cellular shades that offer high R-values to UV-filtering solar shades—allow you to enjoy the light while blocking the damage.
If you are planning a flooring installation in Fond du Lac or Oshkosh, don’t forget to budget for window coverings. Protecting your LVP, hardwood, or tile from the start is the only way to ensure your “projects near me” remain beautiful for decades to come.
